Film description:

American Dad!'s second season aired from September 11, 2005, to May 14, 2006. The season consisted of sixteen episodes. The season is included within the Volume One DVD box set, which was released on April 25, 2006. The random escapades of Stan Smith, an extreme right wing CIA agent dealing with family life and keeping America safe, all in the most absurd way possible. Stan Smith, who works for the CIA and is constantly on the alert for terrorist activity, will go to extremes to protect his beloved America from harm; as evidenced by the terror-alert color code on his fridge, and his frequent knee-jerk reaction of shooting holes in the toaster whenever the toast pops up. In addition to Stan's wife and teenage children, the Smith household has two rather unconventional members. There's Roger, the sarcastic space alien who rescued Stan from Area 51 who deeply resents the fact that he's not allowed to leave the house, and therefore, has been reduced to drinking wine and smoking cigarettes, and Klaus, a lascivious, German-speaking goldfish; the result of a CIA experiment gone seriously wrong where the CIA tried to give a fish a German man's brain. Stan's son is a dorky teenager who tries to be cool. His wife has had a past life of sex and drugs. (Rip by Ahsoka) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_American_Dad!_episodes

Wow. I am so let down. All American Dad was was a rehash of Family guy with frequent cheap shots toward Republicans. And its not funny. I can take a joke- and Bush is definitely ripe for parody, but this show just makes fun of republicans- all of them. And- here's the fresh, edgy part: not only is he conservative, but he lives next to A GAY COUPLE!!! HAHAHAHA!!! That's SO FUNNY!! The random references to Sean Hannity and FOX NEWS don't get many laughs, even from my liberal friends. I love the characters of Family guy, but I can see them in that show now anyway, so there's no point in having the same characters in American Dad. The ridiculousness of having a talking goldfish is limited- Brian, the talking dog, could go places and do things. All the goldfish is good for is the occasional one-liner. And-come on- and alien? I mean, I think that thing is an alien. What is it? Whatever it is, it's not funny, and neither is much of anything else in American Dad. Pass on this show and just watch Family Guy- it's got the same characters, but it's funnier.

This show is created by Seth Macfarlane, so you have to expect it to be somewhat similar to Family Guy, and the inevitable comparisons, but come on! Everything about American Dad and Family Guy is identical, right down to the title. You could switch those words around and call either show American Guy or Family Dad and it would make sense. You have your dumb father, except he's dumb in a patriotic government way, you have the bland housewife, the geeky kid, his outcast sister, Brian is replaced by an alien and Stewie is replaced by a goldfish, and his British accent is turned into a German accent. The art style is exactly the same, the voices are exactly the same, the dad sounds like 75% of the Characters in Family Guy. Message to Seth: other people can do voices too, you know. There's even two wacky news reporters who exchange suggestive sexual banter, except, get this, they're gay!!! They even have lisps!!! Message to TV and movie writers: Making a character gay doesn't automatically make him funny. Gay stereotypes stopped being funny back in the Police Academy movies.

Again this show is just too similar to Famliy Guy to hold out on its own. Look at Futurama, although created by Matt Groening, it is completely different from The Simpsons. Different characters, different art style and colors, different voices, different universe. American Dad is nothing more than Family Guy wearing a Family Guy costume.

As we all know, Seth MacFarlane's Family Guy was canceled three times before being canceled for good (or so we thought). We know the rest of the story as well.. the DVDs for Family Guy sold like hotcakes, and the show is coming back. I, for one, bought the DVDs, but incidentally was not a huge fan while the show was running. It was wonderful to rediscover how funny the show was, and I was happy to hear of its return.

But having had the DVDs for awhile now and having watched them inside out, I realized why Family Guy was canceled in the first place (and don't blame it on Fox constantly changing the time-slots), and I think it's for the same reasons American DAD! is destined for cancellation. While many of the Guy episodes are side-splitting, it's amazing how much of it simply falls flat (watch the episode "Mr. Saturday Night" for a prime example). Here's a review of the pilot episode of American DAD! that I feel demonstrates a lack of ingenuity and humor.

Much as I hate to do it, American Dad! must be reviewed in comparison to Family Guy. The reason is because it's so much alike, it's unavoidable. Perhaps what I'm more peeved by is the characters than the lukewarm jokes.. more on the jokes later. Frankly, our hero, Stan Smith is no Peter Griffin. Peter had many endearing qualities that went along with his idiocy that truly made him a likable character. Peter was loud, sensitive, vulnerable, blue-collar, Irish-Catholic, distinctly northeastern, ignorant, and loving. Granted, we had 3 seasons to fully develop his character unlike American Dad!'s single pilot, but the thing about Peter is that you could tell all those things about him in one episode -- the character was simply well-written. Stan Smith, on the other hand, is a Quadmire-jawed paranoid patriot. Beyond that, there's nothing to him. He's distant, clearly disappointed one of his kids is a liberal and the other a nerd, and simply isn't very endearing. The same can be said for the rest of the family:

The son, Steve, is an unlikeable nerd who does bizarre things that can only be explained by the need to make the audience laugh.. but he's simply not funny. (example: Steve wants to ask a popular cheerleader out and does this by going up to her at lunch, snapping her bra and asking "Hey Lisa, did that hurt so goooood?" This is not even remotely funny and just flat-out makes no sense ) I've never understood the need to make sitcom children losers. I suspect it's because writers believe audiences enjoy laughing at people lower than them. The fat loser son in Family Guy, Chris, was funny simply because of Seth Green's wonderful voicing of the character. But with Steve, there's no charming actor to play him, no funny lines for him to speak, and no desire in the viewer to see him succeed.

The wife, Francine, is a far-cry from Lois Griffin. She's animated as a blonde stepford wife, with awkwardly drawn lips and large breasts. And that's pretty much the character! She has no personality, and contributes nothing to the plot (except the object of lust for the family pet.. sound familiar?) Lois, on the other hand, had a quirky personality, a distinct New England accent, and brought so much to the show. Francine apparently brings with her a hidden past of drug use in college (wow. interesting).

The final human character, Haley, is animated as a hippy. She's voiced by MacFarlane's sister, and she seems to be at least a plausible character. She is virtually left out of the pilot, so I'm not too sure beyond that.

Klaus is a talking fish. He can talk because the CIA switched a fish's brain with an East German Olympic skier in order to prevent the communists from winning the Olympics. He's horny for Francine. I didn't find him compelling, but the scene explaining his origins was definitely one of the few funny parts of the show.

Finally, Roger is an alien who apparently saved Stan's life at Area 51, and resides with the Smiths so Stan's bosses don't find out and erase their memories. He has a serious addiction to junk food and his selfish personality (which in other characters has proved to be funny) is just flat out annoying.

Really, there's no entry point for the viewer. Some have said this is a more politically satirical show, but it really isn't. Many people think Seth MacFarlane is a hardcore liberal making fun of Republicans, but a true Family Guy fan knows SETH IS NO LIBERAL! His view on abortion, his sympathy for the Catholic church, and his cultural conservatism show through in Family Guy in many ways. It's just that Republicans are in power, and like all politicians, they're doing some very stupid things right now that should be made fun of. If Democrats were in power, or were actually doing anything AT ALL, they'd be getting it too. The political humor is very topical, and almost falls more under pop-culture satire.

I'm disappointed. I know Seth MacFarlane is a funny guy, but he suffers from Simpsons-syndrome: TERRIBLE writers cheapening a good idea. Also, Seth is too morally suppressed to shock the viewer. Sure, he'll be edgy here and there, but ultimately he's a good Catholic boy who would never throw anything truly offensive at us as would the South Park guys.

I would be very surprised if this makes it past two seasons.
