Film description:

The story of Jerry Lee Lewis, arguably the greatest and certainly one of the wildest musicians of the 1950s. His arrogance, remarkable talent, and unconventional lifestyle often brought him into conflict with others in the industry, and even earned him the scorn and condemnation of the public.

Great Balls of Fire! is a 1989 American biographical film directed by Jim McBride and starring Dennis Quaid as rockabilly pioneer Jerry Lee Lewis. Based on a biography by Myra Lewis and Murray M. Silver, Jr., the screenplay is written by McBride and Jack Baran. The film is produced by Adam Fields, with executive producers credited as Michael Grais, Mark Victor, and Art Levinson.

The early career of Jerry Lee Lewis, from his rise to rock and roll stardom to his controversial marriage to his 13-year-old cousin that led to his downfall, is depicted in the film. Until the scandal of the marriage depreciated his image, many had thought Lewis would supplant Elvis Presley as the "King of Rock and Roll" in the 1950s.

Jerry Lee Lewis (Quaid) plays piano (as opposed to a guitar like most other rock artists) during rock and roll's early years from 1956 to 1958. Jerry Lee is a man with many different sides: a skilled performer with little discipline, and an alcoholic. As Jerry Lee rises to the top of the charts with such hits as "Crazy Arms", "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin On", and "Great Balls of Fire", he falls in love with Myra Gale Brown (Winona Ryder), the 13-year-old daughter of his first cousin (and bass player) J. W. Brown (John Doe), and eventually marries her (eloping to Mississippi), much to the anger and chagrin of her parents.

A subplot deals with Jerry Lee's relationship with another cousin, (now-televangelist) Jimmy Swaggart (Alec Baldwin), who, during this period, was a struggling Pentecostal preacher. Jimmy's career kept him in constant conflict with his cousin's wild rock and roll career and brings out some uncomfortable exchanges between the two. The now-financially successful Jerry Lee buys a new car and gives it to his cousin, and when Jimmy praises the Lord for the gift, Jerry Lee replies, "Don't thank Jesus, thank Jerry Lee Lewis!"

While Jerry Lee is touring in England 1958, a British reporter discovers he is married to his teenage cousin. Jerry Lee is then condemned as a child molester and a pervert by the public. As a result, his British tour is cancelled and he is deported from England. But it doesn't diminish Jerry Lee's confidence that his career will continue. However, the scandal follows him back to the States.

Jerry Lee starts drinking a lot when record sales and concert attendances are significantly down. He is furious when requested to print a public apology in Billboard and becomes increasingly abusive toward Myra. It was during one of these abusive episodes that Myra informs Jerry Lee that she is pregnant, and he collapses into Myra's arms, crying hysterically.

Jerry Lee and Myra attend a church service conducted by Swaggart. When Jimmy offers one more chance to become saved and get right with God, Jerry Lee again refuses, declaring, "If I'm going to hell, I'm going there playing the piano!" The caption preceding the closing credits reads, "Jerry Lee Lewis is playing his heart out somewhere in America tonight."

*****

An excellent job by director Jim McBride of putting Myra Lewis's book about the life of legendary rock and roll star Jerry Lee Lewis (her husband) on film.

Dennis Quaid gives an over the top performance (sometimes a bit too over the top; but, then again, this is Jerry Lee Lewis) as Lewis, arrogant and child-like, trying to deal with sudden fame, having to deal with the consequences of having married his thirteen year old cousin (Myra, who authored the book). Quaid was truly excellent in this role. Yes, the lip-synching was perhaps a bit too obvious at times, but for the sake of hearing some great music performed by the real Jerry Lee Lewis, that was an irritant I could easily put up with. The relationship between Lewis and Myra (Winona Ryder) is developed sensitively and tastefully by McBride. Humour is added by exploring the complex love-hate relationship between Lewis and his cousin, the evangelist Jimmy Swaggart (Alec Baldwin). There is also great irony, given what ultimately happened to Swaggart, as we listen to him lecturing Lewis about the dangers of taking the "gold-paved streets of rock and roll."

I really enjoyed this movie. Perhaps it was guilty of portraying everyone in it as a bit of a caricature, but it still seemed to offer an entirely believable story of Lewis's life. Well worth the watching.

I saw this movie when it first came out and just happened to see it again tonight - many years later. When I first saw this I had never been a fan of Lewis. After seeing Dennis Quaid's performance, which I thought was incredible by the way, I had to get Whole Lot of Shaking Going On and Great Balls of Fire right away. They soon became party favorites that got everyone on the dance floor. I understood the true genius that embodied Jerry Lee. The movie was fun and the music was fantastic. Wynona Ryder was good as the 13 year old cousin who married him. I can't imagine ever letting my 13 year old daughter marry such a man but he was so endearing that it was hard to hate him for it. I saw Jerry Lee Lewis perform on TV and I always thought he was so crazy and obnoxious and Dennis Quaid nailed him right on the head. Alex Baldwin was an unlikely person to play cousin Jerry Faldwell but he was believable. Over all I loved this movie and it made a fan out of me.

For me, this movie really provided a "2 - for 1" enjoyment, and I suspect others as well: one of my very favorite actors portraying one of my very favorite entertainers. Quaid delivers his usual fine performance, and Winona Ryder is engaging, as she has been each time I've seen her. If one views a movie about a favorite musician, it is inevitable you'll enjoy the music, unless the director and/or performers screw-up royally. Such is not the case here - it's great! If someone pointed a gun at me and demanded I make a critical remark about this film - it would be that, at times, Dennis exaggerated the mannerisms and speech of Jerry Lee in some scenes. However, this is purely minor - actually it rather added a touch of amusement, somewhat like Billy Crystal's doing Fernando Lamas - accurate and a bit "over-the-top" at the same time. And with the music, you can watch this picture again and again, just to enjoy the songs.
