Teenage princess Elena has saved her magical kingdom, Avalor, from an evil sorceress and must now learn to rule as its crown princess. Elena's adventures will lead her to understand that her new role requires thoughtfulness, resilience and compassion, the traits of all truly great leaders. Since she is only 16 years old, she has a Grand Council comprised of her grandparents, older cousin Chancellor Esteban and a new friend, Naomi, to give advice along the way. Elena also looks to her younger sister Isabel, her friends Mateo and Gabe, and a trio of magical flying creatures called jaquins for guidance and support.

Elena of Avalor is an American computer-animated television series that debuted on June 20, 2016 via demand in Canada, on July 1 via internet, with a July 22, 2016 television premiere on Disney Channel in the United States. The series is about a Latina princess and her family and is a spin-off Disney Junior's Sofia the First, as both shows take place in the same universe.

On August 11, 2016 Disney announced that Elena of Avalor was renewed for a second season.

From the promos, I assumed that it would be a Disney Channel version of Sofia The First and that it would only appeal to 5 to 8 year olds and well, I was right and wrong. It has the same animation style as STF and it's also a musical, but I found myself really enjoying it. It has a good message and it's interesting enough. The characters are likable and the songs they sing are actually really good. I like the idea of a Latina princess too, it's really nice. The only request I have is that they should try to make the show appeal more to 9-14 year olds, which I'm guessing is the primary age group of people who even watch Disney Channel. Right now, from what I've seen, it's more of Disney Junior material. That doesn't mean it's a bad show, though. If they succeed in making it more relateable and geared towards the 9-14 age group, I would probably like it way more then I already do. Anyway, it's a good show and I'm glad that Disney Channel is bringing back animated shows.

This show features positive messages for young viewers in a great format! The music, dialogue, and characters are easy to enjoy without pandering or being obnoxious. There is plenty of Latin culture, history, and artistry to each episode. The fantasy characters (like the Jaquins) provide the "magic" and imagination that kids expect in Disney fantasy plots. Now that we've watched the first few shows a time or two, Our 5-year- old explains Elana's backstory (being trapped in an amulet, her grandparents and sister being trapped in a painting) to anyone who will listen. Like Disney Princesses Mulan, Merida, and even Sophia, she is not worried about needing to be rescued- she learns lessons and figures things out on her own.
